Abbaye Notre-Dame d'Leffe - Infos des Landbesitzers:

The Abbey of Leffe is actually the starting point of one of the most famous and best Belgian beers: Leffe. It all started back in 1240 as the records tell us today when the monks where thirsty and needed something "quenchy". Based on the old traditions, the beer was brewed at the abbey until 1809, when disputes between the various owners of the abbey led to a closing of the brewery. In 1952, a Belgian brewer bought the license to brew Leffe beers as the abbey went through hard financial times. But the Belgian brewer also got into economic trouble and was in 1977 finally supported by the Artois brewery, that again merged with Piedboeuf in 1987, creating Interbrew which in the end merged with the Brazilian Ambev into InBev in 2004.

Confused? Well, I am! Anyway, the most important thing might actually be that Leffe still is brewed the very traditional way the monks in the 13th century started with. Today, those 5 types of Leffe are available: Leffe Blond, Leffe Brown, Leffe Radieuse, Leffe 9° and Leffe Triple. Enjoy!
