The Tivoli is Denmark’s most popular amusement park, situated between city hall and central station in the heart of Copenhagen. It opened its gates for the first time in 1843. That makes it to one of the oldest driven amusement parks in the world. The Tivoli is open between April and September each year as well as around Christmas with a Christmas market. In 2008, almost 4 million enthusiastic visitors came to see it.

From the very beginning, the Tivoli focussed on a variety of attractions: exotic buildings of an imaginary orient, theatres, stages, restaurants and cafes, flower shops and rides such as the legendary roller-coaster Rutschebanen. After dark, the park is illuminated in a very beautiful way. On certain nights, there is a firework that mirrors in the lake. During the summer month, the Tivoli organises concerts on Friday nights (Fredagsrock) with various well-known artists such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Sting, the Beach Boys, the Pet Shop Boys, the Cardigans and of course Danish bands like TV-2, Nephew or Thomas Helmig.

The Tivoli is not that popular amongst Danes and tourists only because of its tradition and its reflection of the Danish way of life. Familial and open to the world – but sometimes seen as too expensive by many Danish parents and tourists – the Tivoli undergoes a transformation during the last years from being a Danish cultural institution to a more technological amusement park. This led to the formation of a group called “Friends of Tivoli” (Tivolis venner) that wants to prevent that many of the traditional attractions of the park have to give way to new thrilling rides and buildings.

The lastest ride is the Vertigo, an interactive attraction, speeding you up to 100 km/h in 360° turns with 5.2 g forces deforming your body. The wings rotate with 15 turns per minute, the platforms with an extra 17 turns. This one is not made for a ride right after dinner... have a look:
