The Camp Nou is home of one of the world's most famous and glorious football clubs: the Fútbol Club Barcelona.



Barça, as the FC Barcelona often is called, was actually founded by a Swiss guy in 1899. It was in the late 19th century when football became really popular in Switzerland and was taken from there to Europe. The motto of Barça is written in huge letters on the stands of Camp Nou: "Més que un club" - more than a club. This is also reflected in the popularity of Barça that is said to be supported by a quarter of the Spanish population. Today, Barça is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, at last winning the European Champions League Final 2009 against another giant, Manchester United. But Barça stands not only for football; also basketball, handball, hockey and futsal are played in this club.


Built in 1957, the Camp Nou has an official capacity of 98.772, which makes it the largest stadium in Europe. The British star architect Norman Foster was selected in 2007 to "restructure" the Camp Nou, including an additional 10.000 seats for an estimated price of €250 million. Besides football and Barça, the Camp Nou also hosts events like concerts, e.g. by Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, U2, Frank Sinatra, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, The Three Tenors, José Carreras and Montserrat Caballé. Pope John Paul II managed to gather more than 120.000 people for a mass.

Ok, das war ein eher enttäuschender Besuch im Camp Nou heute. Diese alte Bruchbude muss wirklich bald mal renoviert werden!
