After my earlier description of the Temple Mount - that actually was quite good *backslapping* - was removed effectively by this weird mind that owned this place for a while after having bought it from me, I definitely have to find some new words to tell you something interesting about this place... (by the way, all my pictures and top spots are also gone and changed to some weird stuff... that was not nice!).

I guess I better start with something from Wikipedia: The Temple Mount is THE religious site of Jerusalem. Due to its importance for both Judaism, Islam and to some extend also for Christianity, it is one of the most contested religious sites in the world.

For the Jews, the Temple Mount, or the Foundation Stone in particular, was the place from where the world expanded into its present form, and where God gathered the dust he used to create the first man, Adam. Religious restrictions do not allow the Jewish to enter the most sacred areas of the Temple Mount. Thus the Western Wall, sometimes referred to as the "Wailing Wall", a retaining wall of the Temple Mount and remnant of the Second Temple structure, is considered to be the holiest accessible site for Jews to pray.

For the Islam, the Temple Mount is the third holiest place of their believe. On Muhammad's journey to Jerusalem, it was the location of his ascent to heaven. Muslims see the site as being one of the earliest and most noteworthy places of worship of God. The Temple Mount is also the location of the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, which is seen as the oldest existing Islamic structure in the world.

For the Christians, the Temple Mount is mentioned many times in both the Old and the New Testament. It was here, where Jesus prays and chases away money changers and other merchants from the courtyard, turning over their tables and accusing them of desecrating a sacred place with secular ways. In connection to the temple, he predicts the destruction of the Second Temple and compares his body to a temple that will be torn down and raised up again in three days. Though some Christians believe that the temple will be reconstructed before the Second Coming of Christ, the Temple Mount is relatively unimportant as religious site to most Christians.

The latest history: Controlled by Israel since 1967, both Israel and the Palestinian Authority claim sovereignty over the site, which remains a key issue in the Arab-Israeli conflict. A Muslim council, known as the Muslim Waqf, manages the site. The Israeli government enforces a controversial ban on prayer by non-Muslim visitors.
