Rådhuspladsen - Infos des Landbesitzers:
City Hall Square:
The city hall square is located centrally between Vester Voldgade and the H.C. Andersen boulevard in front of the Copenhagen city hall. The square replaced the former Halmtorv. A zero point marks the place where the square was located before the fall of the Copenhagen ramparts in the 50s of the 19th century.
Rådhuspladsen is usually very crowded. It represents the beginning of Strøget, Copenhagen’s main shopping street. On the roof and the façades around the square, lots of neon commercials are installed. The House of Industry is covered almost completely.
A central point of the square is the bus station terminal that separates the open square next to the city hall from the bus stations on the other side. Since its opening in 1996, people are arguing about that building. Many think that it is misplaced and that its impression is too pretentious compared to the style of square. It was said that the square becomes anaesthetic and for many the building is just ugly.
The city hall square shows many signs of influence of Italian squares, especially this of Siena. But also Piccadilly Circus in London and Times Square in New York have the same functionalities. All can be seen as city centre and pivotal point. From time to time, Rådhuspladsen hosts arrangements like exhibitions, concerts and “public viewing”, e.g. for football matches. It is also used as venue for more “celebrative” events as for the Copenhagen Gay Parade or New Years Eve. Sometimes, demonstrations use the square as scene.
Many other Danish city have a place with the same name: Billund, Frederiksværk, Hørning, Otterup, Slagelse, Store Heddinge and Århus. The city hall square is also known as the most expensive street in the Danish version of Monolopy.
Have a look at this fancy weather forecast before you plan a trip to Copenhagen next time:
City Hall:
The current city hall of Copenhagen is located at the south east end of the city hall square. The city hall of Siena in Italy was the model for that. Construction time was between 1892 and 1895. The official opening of the city hall was on September 12, 1905.
The Copenhagen city hall has a very impressing façade, dominated by a sculpture of Absalon directly above the balcony on the front side and a high, slender tower. The city hall tower is the highest building in Copenhagen (105,6 m). The sound of the tower bells is well known to every Dane as it is played every day at noon on Danmark Radio (DR) station, until 2003 even live, and on New Years Eve. Another famous clock can be found inside the city hall, the world clock by Jens Olsen.
In the building, the meeting room of the city council is located as well as the marriage hall and the celebration hall of the city. Behind the city hall, the city hall gardens can be visited. The garden had an ancestor in the first half of the last century that reached all the way along the city hall façade on the side of the former Vester Boulevard. This was removed in the 50s, because the boulevard needed to be moved due to the opening of Langebro bridge. At this time, it was also given a new name: H.C. Andersen Boulevard, after the famous the Danish author.
