The Eiffel Tower was built between 1887 and 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the World Exhibition in 1889. The tower was also built to celebrate the first centennial of the French revolution. Nevertheless, it actually was not Eiffel who had the idea for the tower, but a Swiss architect named Koechlin.

Despised by the Parisians in the beginning and flouted as “tragic lantern”, the Eiffel Tower became the town’s landmark over the years and is now called lovingly the “iron lady”. For the perfect view over Paris, three platforms were established on heights of 57, 115 and 276 metres. Not only the 6 million tourist feels attracted by the tower each year but also suicides. During all those years, there have been 400 people trying to pass away in a very tragic way.

Until 1930, the Eiffel Tower was the highest building of the world when this title went to the Chrysler Building. Within just 26 months, 3000 metal workers assembled 18.038 single pieces to a whole using 2,5 million rivets. With a total height of 300 metres (without the antenna), 10.000 tons of steel are standing on the Champ de Mars. And if the tower needs to be painted, what has to be done every seventh year, 200.000 sqm of steel have to be treated with 60 tons of painting.
