Carlsberg A/S is one of the biggest brewing companies of the world and foremost known by its brands Carlsberg and Tuborg. In German speaking countries, it is available with its brands Holsten, Astra, Lübzer, Feldschlösschen and Hannen Alt. The breweries of Carlsberg produce worldwide 83 million bottles of beer… each day! To make it more clear: The new high bay warehouse of Carlsberg in the Danish city of Fredericia has been built with twice as much steel as there was used for the Eiffel Tower and yet, there is only space for 63 million bottles.

The brand Carlsberg, a Danish pilsner, is market leader in Denmark and one of the most popular beers of the world. The green logo with its conventionalised hops and the English slogan “probably the best beer in the world” (in the original actually spoken by Orson Welles) is unchanged since the 70s. Carlsberg is present in sport sponsoring and gives its name for cultural institutions. Tuborg, the smaller of the two popular Danish beers made by Carlsberg, was brewed for the first time in 1880 in Copenhagen as well. In Germany, Tuborg is actually more popular than Carlsberg and is brewed a bit sweeter than in Denmark and – of course – according to the German purity law of 1516.

The history of Carlsberg reaches back to 1847 as the founder Jacob Christian Jacobsen started with “Carlsberg-Bryggerier Kjøbenhavn”. The original company area of these days is know today as “Gamle Carlsberg” (Old Carlsberg) and quite popular amongst tourists in Copenhagen. Guided tours, beer tastings and cultural events are offered here. Carlsberg starts early to sell its beer abroad. In 1868, the first cask comes from Copenhagen to Edinburgh and the British learned to appreciate good Danish beer. In 1939, Carlsberg stands for 55 % of the entire British beer imports. In 1908, they developed a special type of yeast for a pale lager in their labs and it was named after the brewery: “Saccharomyces carlsbergensis”.

The visitor's centre that re-opened in 2005 offers some unique experiences: 10.000 sqm of exhibition including explanations about making good beer and of course the history of Carlsberg, the world's largest collection of beer bottles (more than 18.000 (!)), old machinery and trucks for beer making and deliverance, the extraordinary architecture of "Gamle Carlsberg", a micro brewery with lots of special beers, beer tastings... it's worth a tour!
