The Rolex Société Anonyme is a Swiss watch manufacturer located in Geneva. They produce high quality watches in the high price segment and are due to there market position one of the most copied watches worldwide.

The company was founded by Hans Wilsdorf from Kulmbach in Germany – so far for the myth of “Swiss made precision” – who came to La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland around 1900. Having sold his first watches to England, he decided to drive his own business in London in 1905. The company Wilsdorf & Davis should export movements for him to England to be combined with luxury cases. But at this time, it was usual that watches were named after the seller and not the producer. After moving to Geneva in 1919 Rolex was founded and became the first manufacturer to break with the naming tradition. Its famous logo with the crown was introduced in the 40s. Today, Rolex is owned by a trust that was established by Wilsdorf in 1944. The company produces 2000 watches a day and is by far the most important manufacturer of luxury watches of the world. Rolex is very active advertising with celebrities from art and culture as well as sponsoring sport and culture events.

In 1926, the first patented water proof watch, the “Oyster”, came on the market. As a marketing gag, a swimmer should wear the watch while crossing the English Channel. Good idea, the trial to cross the Channel failed, but the watch was still working. Rolex generally does not develop complex watches as their main focus is on durability, precision and functionality.
