Harley Davidson was founded in 1903 by William S. “Bill” Harley (1880-1943) and Arthur Davidson (1881-1950) and his two brothers Walter and William as “Harley-Davidson Motor Co.”. Harley and Davidson began at this time to build their first motorbikes in a shed in Milwaukee. That makes Harley-Davidson to be the fifth oldest motorbike brand that still is producing, behind Husqvarna, Royal Enfield, Triumph and American Motorcycles (AMC).

The production was started by mounting a small one cylinder engine to a bicycle frame, driving the rear wheel directly without gears or coupling. Unsatisfied with their first experiences and driven by more stability and quality, the developers continued with more reliable examples of good workmanship. That ended in a wide spread reputation of the bikes delivering excellent properties. Due to its grey colour and a relatively silent engine for those days, the 350 ccm motorbike of the pioneer days was simply called “Silent Grey Fellow”. Already in 1906, Harley-Davidson produced 50 pieces of that motorbike. The model was followed of many others with significant improvements but also impairments.

In the 60s, neither the American nor the Italian models were technically up-to-date. The old two-stroke engines could not compete with the established European companies or the new coming Japanese competitors. That caused a drastic decline in sales and the Harley-Davidson had to go public. Besides, it was decided to focus on the more modern choppers instead of small motorbikes. After a management buy-out in 1981 and after having established a new promotion strategy, character and experience of and with Harley-Davidson motorbikes were placed centrally to distinguish itself from the Japanese rivals. The Harley-Davidson brand finally attained cult status and the products could be established in the (price wise) premium sector.

   The inventor of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Arthur Davidson, died and went to heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur. 'Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is, you can hang out with anyone you want to in heaven.'

   Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, ' I want to hang out with God.'

   St. Peter took Arthur and introduced him to God. God recognized Arthur and commented, 'Okay, so you were the one who invented the Harley-Davidson motorcycle? '

   Arthur said, 'Yeah, that's me...' and God commented: 'Well, what's the big deal in inventing something that's pretty unstable, makes noise and pollution and can't run without a road?'

   Arthur was a bit embarrassed, but finally spoke, 'Excuse me, but aren't you the inventor of woman?' God said, 'Ah, yes.'

   'Well,' said Arthur, 'professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:
1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end suspension
2. It chatters constantly at high speeds
3. Most rear ends are too soft and wobble about too much
4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust
5. The maintenance costs are outrageous!!!!

   'Hmmmmm, you may have some good points there,' replied God, 'hold on.' God went to his Celestial supercomputer, typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it. 'Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed,' God said to Arthur, 'but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours'.
