Glenfiddich Distillery - Infos des Landbesitzers:

Glenfiddich (pronounced with a hard "ch" as in the word "Loch", means: "valley of the deer") is a whisky distillery in the Scottish Highlands, in the capitol of whisky production - Dufftown - in the Speyside region where uncountable numbers of excellent whiskies come from. Glenfiddich is the world market leader for single malt whisky, though Glenmorangie still is the number one counting the overall production of whisky. The Glenfiddich distillery is privately owned in the 5th generation, which is quite rare in these days. Special for the distillery and unique for a whisky producer in the Highlands is that Glenfiddich bottles their own product. This is also one of the reasons why the are no independent bottlers cooperating with Glenfiddich.

Glenfiddich was founded in 1886/87 by William Grant who also built the distillery with the help of his family (7 sons, 2 daughters... busy guy...). In 1898, it was decided to merchandise an own blend label (called "Standfast") world wide after the major buyer of Glenfiddich's blend product went bankrupt. A wise decision, when looking at the future of other small distilleries of this time. Competition reasons forced Glenfiddich to be the first distillery to bring a single malt whisky on the market in 1963. Again, a brilliant turn as Glenfiddich stands for 26% of all sold single malts today.

There is a wide range of vintage whiskies available: 12, 15, 18, 21 and 30 year old as standard as well as a handful of rare 40 and 50 yo. The style of the Glenfiddich whisky is rather fruity when young and thus recommendable as aperitif. More mature bottlings remind more of chocolate and raisins and are better to enjoy after the dinner.
